Those who work for our wounded and convalescent soldiers in the big hospitals at home have to deal with many pathetic eases. Mr. A. L. Baumgart, who is representing the New Zealand Y.M.C.A. at the No. 1, N.Z., General Hospital at Brockenhurst, speaks of one such in a recent report. "The saddest casp we have yet dealt with "he calls it. - The lad referred to has suffered such injury to his eyes that it is extremely improbable that he will be able to retain his sight, He is only 21 but is full of grit and spirit, and it is which he attends the Y.M.C.A. basketmaking class each morning. He is anxious to lose no time because he knows that the darkness is ever drawing nearer and he can see in the basketwork employment that he can continue after that dreaded time has come. In spite of the sadness of it, there is, says Mr Baumgart, great joy in serving such a man as this—joy in seeing the interest and pleasure he takes in the work, and joy in knowing that he will be to a very great extent prepared for the blow when it does come.
