RED CROSS APPEAL.
To the Editor. Sir ? —The good war news of to-day will inevitably be followed by a long list of casualties, reminding us of the ever present duty of expressing our gratitude by helping to restore the wounded to health and strength again Some people are under the impression that, a terrible lot of money goes to Red Cross work from this country. The fact is, that last year less than 10s per soldier was subscribed in New Zealand. There were 80,000 soldiers at the front and the total sum was under £48,000. There were at least 20,000 soldiers on the way to the front in various stages of development. The military district of which Auckland is the centre, subscribed £BOOO only, a really pitiful contribution to such a pre-eminently important object. Taihape has done so well that it is apt to judge the whole of New Zealand by its own experience —but Taihape is leading New Zealand in Red Cross work and I hope will continue to lead it and give it a jolly good lead atthat. Other districts are now waking up and we must not let them get ahead of us; so no more murmuring or complaining, but into the fray let us rush with a cheer and a roar.—l am, etc., W. P. STENT.
