MR. G. W. HEAN INTERVIEWED. ‘ * May I ask why you have the word ‘Heenzo ’ as, the registeredname for Hean’s Essence?” was a qustion, put to Mr. Hean the other day “I am glad y|>u asked that,” was the answer, “as it gives me an opportunity of telling readers why I have taken a step that seems to be puzzling not a few. The fact of the matter is, I have changed the name of Hcan’s Essence to Heenzo (which word I have registered as a trade-mark) in order to protect the public against imitations of my preparation. “The success achieved by Hean’s Essence has brought to light quite a number of people who are seeking to make money at the expense of the pub'lic and myself. There have been discovered no less than seven imitators at work putting up inferior substitutes If they had put up a cough mixture essence bearing their own name I would have had no quarrel with them, but in every instance they adopted a fictitious name of one syllable only so> that it might easily be confused with my name. Against some of these I have obtained New Zealand Supreme Court injunctions restraining them from further infringement of my rights. Others have discontinued imit* ating Hean’s Essence without having to go to court.

“The trade-marking of “Heenzo” and its appearance on the cartons and bottles of all my preparations in future, will safeguard buyers against piracy. It is worthy of mention just here that several of the imitations of Hean’s Essence were such in name only. Upon analysis they were found to be largely composed of paregoric and laudanum, extracts of the deadly habit forming opium drug, the inclusion of which in cough mixtures for family use cannot be too strongly discouraged. “I hope the public will fully realise the importance of availing themselves of the protection which the trade-mark’ Heenzo ’ will afford them. Of course, there is still a good deal of genuine Hean’s Essence distributed through the country which does not boar the trade, mark name on the cartons and labels; but this! will soon all be used up, and the name “Heenzo” will quickly become as familiar as Hean’s Essence is now,” Heenzo (Hean’s Essence) is sold by most chemists and stores, or sent promptly post free on receipt of price, 2s, from Hcan’s Pharmacy, Wanganui.!
