With somewhat mixed feelings of concern, curiosity and inquisitivenesSj we questioned a German yesterday, as to what German war leaders in his country would think of the way in which the New Zealand Government were performing our part in trying to win the war. For a few seconds our question went through some mental evolutions which we cannot attempt to describe or explain, then followed a broad Teuton smile, and he said: New Zealand is not at war ? as we in Germany understand war. It is taught in our military colleges that before we start war we must first remove every possible source of danger. You British in New Zealand have Germans in all your walks of life so much that it is a wonder you do not insist upon a few German members of Parliament. Your Government advocates the employment of our people- as though you British were not able to do the work. Even on the ships and on the wharves where most danger lies, you give work to Germans and let your own people be idle. We Germans do not understand that, we go to war to win what we go to war for, and we do not put our enemies where they can do a very great deal in causing the death of our soldiers and people, destroy our food and war material, and in many other ways do so much to help our country to lose the war; we do not do anything so foolish, as the present war will show. If Germany went to war as New Zealand does, this war would have been over long ago. The Allies have now much the greater strength and yet Germany by the thoroughness of her methods makes it still a matter of doubt whether she will be beaten, while we Germans know that the war would have ended long ago if your people did not
take their enemies into their bosom. German ships can come right into New Zealand seas because there are friends on sea and on shore from whom the help and information comes that makes their presence possible.
ing German naval men and they will come to New Zealand when it suits them if by some chance they are not accidentally stumbled upon. The Germans you employ ,on your ships, on your wharves, and in your country, even if they do not deliberately assist in what you call wreckage and piracy, they will naturally give information that helps them to retain their freedom, and sequentially to be a standing menace to your ships, and your internal war organisation. New Zealand's recruiting has been very troublesome, very costly; your Government has got more kicks over its defence management than anything else j but is not a very great deal due to the German at the bottom of it? You will not learn by acts of treachery; you have the Nimodt case, and others not so glaring, but your Government will not part with it.? Ger- - mans. You lose your ships, nobody knows where the Wairuna is, but most of you know there are mysterious vessels about. Your Government stands up for Germans on the wharves and your ships are sunk a few miles from your shores. No! Germany does not go to war like New Zealand, and it would not be complimentary to say what German war lords are likely to think of the way you people try to win. The way Germany cleans out before it starts of all possible treachery is quite enough to convince a simpleton of what Germany thinks of your methods. You give the greatest military system ever built up every chance to win the war, and had it not been for egregious blunders unpardonable military mistakes in disregarding the principles of war while influenced by a feeMrjg that success was certain you people would have been in much the same j relation to Germany to-day that the J Yaquis are to Mexico. If, you do defeat the military government of Germany millions of Germans will re-
Ijoice, they know they will not be enslaved as Prussia would enslave you; they know they will have fredom to elect their own Government and they will be glad to be rid of sword and bullet government, which keep the millions poor and the few rich. There are Germans in America who will be loyal to the country of their adoption, and that is so with some Germans in New Zealand; but those men are loyal; if you hear one word or see one action that i s not loyal there is danger, it may be the sinking of a ship or trouble that causes delay in the war and creates enmity among you people. Germany does not have English teachers or students in her schools and colleges; she does not give .army commissions to the English and expect them to fight German battles; she does not enlist English in the ranks where they get vitally important information and then treacherously desert and cause disaster in our ranks; Germany does not put English sailors aboard her ships s.o that they may sink them with bombs and give information that is to bring her trouble; she does not put English farmers on her lands which German soldiers have gone to fight for, neither does she employ English soldiers on her shipping wharves to the danger of every ship they come in contact with and the lives of the people thereon. No, Germany does not understand New Zealand's methods of helping to win the war, and she knows that were it not for the tremendously overwhelming advantages and strength in the Allies' favour, such methods would lose any war. The German war ways are compelling England to do likewise or go under. German war methods are what Germany understands; fight her with those methods and you will soon have a beaten Germany. The above is the gist of a conversation with a German who has been many years in this eountry.
