GERMAN AIR RAIDS. FRENCH MAKE REPRISALS. LONDON, October 1 French communique.— Enemy aeroplanes last night bombed the Bar le Due, causing damage and casualties. Twelve enemy aeroplanes were downed. Our air squadrons bombed railway stations, aerodromes, cantonments and works, causing violent fires at Fresuoy le Grande. At 8.15 the second group attempted to cross the defences, north-east and north of London but were hot successful until shortly after nine a few passed over London and bombs were again dropped in the south-western district. A third group of raiders crossed the Kentish coast but did not penetrate far westward. They dropped bombs on various places. * '■ ' A fourth group crossed the Essex, coast and approached London shortly before 10 o’clock but did not penetrate beyond the north-eastern outskirts, where bombs were dropped. It reported from Norway that German agents have been discovered carrying explosives and disease germs in cans; labelled meat, asparagus, and fruit, and also in incendiary apparatus purporting to be meat packed in Buenos Ayres. A sensation has been caused by the finding of a quantity of similarly labelled tins at Hampstead. A grocer sold the tins, all of which were returned on the ground that the moat turned black. Experts state that the brand is unknavpn. Detectives are investigating.
