AIR RAID ON LONDON. FOUR GROUPS ATTACK. FORMATIONS BROKEN BY GtJNFIRE. LONDON, Sept 30. The Press Bureau says that, reports show that three groups .of raiders determinedly and simultaneously attacked London, approaching from different directions. Anti-aircraft gunfire broke up the groups, and only two, possibly three, machines penetrated the defences. Their bombs fell in the north-eastern and southeastern districts. . A fourth group attempted to approach London but was driven off. None of these penetrated the outer defences, but dropped bombs on Kent and Essex. Pull reports of the casualties and damage have not yet been, received, but both are believed to be comparatively light. AEFjIALi ■ REPRISALS URGED. AGAINST INVASIONS ON LONDON Received 9.5. LONDON, October 1. The Daily Mail strongly urges aerial reprisals on Germany. It says recent invasions of England are only on a small gcale, but London’s guns will be unavailing against more numerous and more powerful invasions in the near future. The London Times says the public demands a great air fleet capable of carrying the war into Germany. Air raids into Britan are likely to be now continuous, whether it i s moonlight or dark. LAST SUNDAY’S AIR RAID. LORD FRENCH’S REPORT. LONDON, October 1. Lord French reports that in Sunday’s air raid nine persons were killed and 42 injured. In London there were two the only persons killed. An enemy machine was brought down at Dover. GERMAN WAR BABIES PREMIUM ON IMMORALITY. Sept 30. The German Government has offered a premium of 500 marks -(£20) for every poor unmarried woman bearing a child. It will also contribute to its support for the first 14 years. Such children will be considered legitimate. The Emperor Kar has already issued a decree legitimising illegitimates born in Austria since the beginning of the war, ARGENTINE AND GERMANY. BUENOS AYRES, Sept. 30. The National Committee, favouring a rupture with Germany, interviewed the President,, who declared that the Gorman explanation was satisfactory. The severance of relations would place the Argentine in an innocuous and neuter. He added that he would state his views in a manifesto calling a congress of South American neutrals to consider their attitude HOLDING BELGIUM AS A STRONG CARD. I I AMSTERDAM, Sept. 30 The most important result of the Reichstag Committee decisions is that the Government doubtless reckons to open peace negotiations at a not remote date. The Socialists do not regard Dr. Michaelis 7 s demand for a free hand in Belgium as indicating that Belgium should be regarded as a valuable card in peace negotiations.
