SAVING CARGO SPACE.
HEAVIER BALES OF WOOL. WELLINGTON, Sept. 22. A suggestion was made to the Minister for Agriculture in the House of Representatives to-day, by Mr. E. Newman Eangitikci) that space in outward cargo ships might be saved if instructions were issued to farmers to increase the weight of wool bales. This had been done in Australia, and it was calculated that in the Australian clip 10 full cargoes would be saved, and that the saving in the cost of wool packs would be £40,000. The Minister said that there had been many suggestions for saving space on outward steamers. One was for a special method of dressing carcarcases of mutton, and another was that weight of the carcases should be increased by farmers exporting only prime fully grown sheep. As for wool, he thought most farmers who had the proper appliances put in as much wool as they could into each ale. Many had not the proper appliances, but he thought the high price of wool packs, from 3s dd to 4s each, would be suffi-' cicnt, incentive to farmers to fill them as full as possible.
