AMUSEMENTS

THREE STARS The programme at the Three Stars to-night will introduce to Taihape two brilliant stars in the Cinema world —Emily Stevens and Frank Mills, both of whom have won a place at the top of the tree as artistic and powerful performances in moving, pictures. ‘TheWheel of the Law,” is the piece selected and is a striking example of what intelligent direction and high-class acting can do when a strong story is given. The main theme is the convicting on capital charges on merely circumstantial evidence. The leading male character is an ambitious district attorney, who has won a reputation by his ability to secure convictions on circumstantial evidence, and the plot makes him work with might and main to convict a man of murder after he has been promised the governorship by the real murderer if he secures a conviction. The lawyer’s wife is the sister of the innocent man, but he will not listen to her pleadings until she shows her husband that it is possible to entangle even a clever lawyer liT the same mesh. The picture is unique in that it is almost wholly taken within doors, special permision having to be obtained to enable the scenes to be taken in a real court, not, as has invariably been the case, of having the court composed of members of the film producers’ staff. The human element is predominant throughout, a beautiful love story running like a golden thread through the whole drama This picture should be viewed by every one, as it discloses phases of life not often seen on the screen.
