MORE RETURNED TROOPS[ ARRIVE. AUCKLAND, this day. Another batch of returned troops, numbering 450, Arrived to-day. They Comprise invalided and limb cases, but no cot cases. Thirty-three officers who qualified for commissions at Cambridge and Oxford have returnee. | One man, Private J. M. Nicol, Otago Infantry, died at sea. Four decorated officers and one decorated non-com. returned. SUSPECTED SMALLPOX IN GISBORNE. 1- v.: I ' GISBORNE, this day. A Suspected case of smallpox has been taken from Gisborne Hospital and isolated at the old hospital huTtnings. The patient was employed ar a local hotel, and a girl who llveowith her has also been put into isolation as a contact. SUPPOSED SUICIDE. AUCKLAND, this day. Duncan Hepburn, 76, died at the hospital as a result of injuries supposed to he self-inflicted. He was found lying on the floor of a shed behind his residence at Onehunga, face and helid covered in blood, and a tomahawk beside him. He was a retired bricklayer. FIRE ON A STEAMER, AUCKLAND, this day. Early last evening, after work was stopped on a steamer discharging cargo at the wharf, volumes of smoke issued from the hatch. The fire brigade pumped water through holes in the deck till midnight, when the fire apparently abated, but continued operations. Four firemen and a watersider who entered the hold were overcome by the smoke, and removed to the hospital .
