VICE-REGAL VISIT TO WANGANUI. (Special Correspondent.) WANGANUI, this day. His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, accompanied by Lady Liverpool, arrived in Wanganui yesterday and were met and welcomed by the Mayor and councillors, members of the .sergeant Art Gallery, and representatives of the various local bodies. During the afternoon they visited the Returned Soldiers' Club, in which they displayed considerable interest. Last night, at His Majesty's Theatre, His Excellency presented the Huun. Memorial Medal for research in geology to Dr. Marshall, Principal of the Collegiate School. The worthy doctor was accorded quite an ovation. St. Jjohn ArubUjlance medals wer&jpresented to Sergt.-Major Beconsfield and Mr P. Brine and certificates were presented to other members of Ijhe Society. The visit of Lord Liverpool was primarily to lay the foundation stone of the Sergeant Art Gallery, which cost £20,000. The vice-regal party returned to Wellington at noon to-day. R CASE OF SUICIDE. NAPIER, this day. An unidentified Maori 36 years, was found dead in a house at Port Ahuriri this morning, hanging Trom the stairs by a black silk handkerchief. Deceased i s believed to have come from Opotiki and was known locally as George. Appearances suggest that he had" been dead three days. He left a note saying he intended to take his life owing to illhealth. SPOKTING. ASHBURTON RACES. ASHBURTON, this day.
