RED CROSS DAY.
To the Editor. Sir,—His Majesty the King has asked the Empire to celebrate October 18 as Red Cross Day. We in to be given an opportunity thenwof showing our loyalty, our unity, and our gcnerosity.lt may be necessary and helpful to state a few facts about the work of the Red Cross. The N.Z. Red Cross supplies the hospitals and all their appurtenances for New Zealanders in England alone. For the sol- | dicrs of the Empire in France, Egypt,.l Mesopotamia, Greece, and Egypt, ali 1 the work isdonc by the British Red : Cross. Our New Zealand soldiers there 1 do not come under our jurisdiction so § far as Red Cross work is concerned.. I This will show why the British Red Cross is justly entitled in soliciting-. our support of their work,-and, perhaps, will be a cause for surprise to many people other than Red Cross The expenses of the British Red Cross are £SOOO per day, or £3,000,000 per annum. We are being asked to do something towards this in addition topurely N.Z Eed Cross "work, and if we remember that (1) many New Zealand soliders in Egypt, France, and oilier places will be benefitted by it, amU(2) we have a responsibility and a debt to pay to soldiers from other parts of the Empire, we will all gladly do our best to make the Day a success financially. It has been decided to send half the proceeds of Our Day to the British Red Cross and half to the N.Z. Red Cross. Thanking you, sir, for opportunity of bringing this important matter before your readers.—l am, &c., W. F. STENT.
