GERMAN INTRIGUE. WASHINGTON, Sept. 18 A German intrigue has been unearthed in the Phillipines. The German Vice-Consul at Cebu ■was arrested for an attempt to start an insurrection. It is alleged he promised the Fillipinos any white woman in Cebu they might choose on condition they joined in a revolt against the United States.
The recent official embargo on the free interchange of news between the Dominion and the Commonwealth has •had a queer result in Brisbane, where a journal prints the following;—Notwithstanding the official statement that there has been no rioting in New Zealand, Mr Pollock, in the Legislative Assembly, asked the Premier if he had heard the rumour that Queens land soldiers who had enlisted for active service against Germany had been sent to New Zealand to quell the anti-conscription riots? If so would he inquire of the Prime Minister whether this is true? and would he, if satisfied that it is untrue, take steps to have it contradicted by the press, and thus remove a grave obstacle to voluntary enlistment? Mr Ryan replied that he had not heard such a rumour, but he had communicated with the Prime Minister on the subject, and would await his reply.
