WORD BUILDING COMPETITION.

A few months back Messrs. E. Wilson and Co. ; Ltd. ; Taihapo, commenced a "Word Building Competition,? ’ open to all scholars in schools under the Wanganui Education Board, in the Main Trunk districts, as an adjunct to the advertising of Big Benzine, for which they are the distributing agents. The competitions were to try how many words; they could build up out of the letters in the words, "Use big tree benzine always,” no letter was to be used a greater number of times in any one word than the number ■ of times such letter appears in that yentjence. 'Any word not in a standard English dictionary to be disallowed. Mr. F. Pirani, Chairman of the Wanganui Education Board, accepted the position of judge, and he was given discretion to reward any competitor for especially neat work and good writing, hy adding to that competitor’s score an addition of 10 per cent, in words written. The patience, application, and talent display-

ed by the leading competitors is truly amazing, the highjesb number being no less than 2394 wards. We have been privileged to see the entries and have no hesitation in stating that the writing in several cases is excellent, and the compilation of fhe lists remarkably creditable. The judge, Mr. Pirani, awarded Miss Doris Grossman, wdio came third, the 10 per cent, additional wards for the admirable work she sent in. Seldom indeed does one see such excellent, neat, clear, transcription. We understand that the New Zealand Agents of Big Tree Benzine have asked for Miss Grossman’s exhibit, as they wdsh to send it to their principals in America. The first three placed ware; 1. M. Alexander, Taihape .. 2394.. 2. Rene Taylor, Taihape.... 2D59 3. Doris Grossman, Taihape 1798 Others close up ware: May Siddle, Taihape, 1592; L. Taylor, Taihajie, 1528; Hilda Wapp, Taihape, 1493; Molly McKenzie, Rangoiti, 1242. From a look through the papers we are convinced that Mr. Pirani’s judging was purely a labour of love, and he has more than earned all the thanks that can be accorded him.
