Evidence of the withdrawal from civil employment of a large number of men for defence purposes is contained in the factory statistics of the Labour Department report. The numbers of factories and factory workers for the past three years were: Factories, 1914-15, 13,937; 1915-16, 13,214; 1916-17 < 12,455; workers, 191415. 88,812; 1915-16, 83,011; 1916-17, ?S,IBS. Greatly increased overtime was necessitated by the decrease in the number of workers " and 'the increase of work in many trades. The total overtime worked by females and boys in the fifteen principal towns the Dominion amounted to 489 374 hours jafjt year, as" against hours in the previous year.
