THE PORTUGUESE "SLAVES"
"Legion of Slaves," was the Kaiser's designation of Portugal's •'contemptible little array," when it first appeared on the Western front, under the chieftainship of General Tamagnini All this time the German scorn for this force was such tha't they dare not attack it. At last the enemy made up its mind to move, with sad results for itself, and undying fame for the Portuguese soldiery. The "Scrranos," to give them their generic name of "Tommies," showed themselves particularly adept with the bayonet, much to the Bosche's sorrow, for of all modes of warfare the use of cold steel is, for the latter, the most terrifying. Thus the "Scrranos" have had their baptism of fire, with edifying results to themselves; their blood has been spilled on the sorrow-stricken soil of France, and Portugal has become an allied brother-in-arms, not in words only, but in deeds. And now it is the turn of America's "Sammies," as they are to be styled.
