IN THE AIR.

HALF THE RAIDERS INTERCEPTED. LONDON, Sept 6. The Royal Flying Corps intercepted at least half the raiders, and drove them back towards the sea. The rest reached London at a high altitude, in three relays j at intervals of twenty minutes. They did not attempt to preserve their battle formation, and dropped torpedoes and bombjs aimlessly. Londoners generally took cover effectively, hence the small casualties. A terrific thunder-storm, in which several London buildings were struck by lightning, broke the sequence of the air raid. • It is reported that hostile aircrafts' attempts to approach the south-east coast were frustrated by the weather. SCARBOROUGH BOMBARDED LONDON, Sept. 5. A British official report says: "A submarine appeared off Scarborough last evening and fired thirty rounds, half of which fell on land. Three people were killed and five injured. The damage was slight."' ' SOUTH AFRICA. AFRICAN CAMPAIGN. OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. Received 9.30. LONDON, Sept 6. A Belgian East African communique states: B'efore the converging to advance of the Anglo-Belgian columns the enemy retired to the southbank of the Kilimbero river. An enemy detachment on the river Santo were attacked on the 24th August, and driven southwards. The AngloBelgian columns junctioned at Trakara, on the northern bank of the Kilimbero. .BRUTALISED GERMANY. DEFEAT MUST BE COMPLETE. NEW YORK, Sept. 5. Ex-President RooseveUt, in the course of a speech to-day, said that there must be' no peace except through the complete defeat of the brutalised Prussianised Germany of the Hohenzollerns. Germany's methods of warfare were hideous beyond belief, cruelly and unspeakably brutal. Newspapers published in the German language in the United States were scandalously- disloyal, and should be suppressed.
