THE LATEST GODLEY MEANNESS
We confess to seeing nothing in General Godley to make it worth while mentioning him in our despatch for strokes of genius. Our experience is all the other way ? and the latest evidence of his petty spirit raises our wrath some more against a commander who gets fame every time the New Zealanders win it Tor him by their valour. It appears that the commander of the Anzacs, who throughout the war ha s shown no generosity in awarding special medals to our boys for brave individual deeds on Gallipoli and in Flanders although the cost of those medals does not come out of the Godley pocket—has now taloen to writing his name across sheets of parchment, as “records of good service!” Surely, if a soldier i s worthy of such a certificate he is worthy of being mentioned' in despatches. And has anyone before ever heard during the course of a war of a commanding officer having the time and the petty thought of writing out cerificates? Are our men scholars or soldiers —is the Godley person a commander or a schoolmaster or a soldier? —Feilding Star.
