GOLFERS' RED CROSS EFFORT
The members" of the Taihape Golf Club have every reason to be. proud of their effort on behalf of the Rd Cross Fund.
When operations were commenced £6O was aimed at,-that sum being sufficient to beat the previous best the previous bese elTort —that of Hihitahi. When the Executive got busy, however, it wa s early seen that £6O would be beaten; £IOO was then aimed at. The Executive were full of ambition, and aimed still higher. On Saturday morning the golfers felt certain of £l5O, but as is usual with appeals to the Taihape public, the final results exceeded expectations. At the conclusion of Saturday's proceedings £lB5 was in hand, which it is hoped to swell to £2OO when the cow donated by Mr J. Cooper has been auctioned.
The Golfers will be the first to offer hearty congratulations to any section of the community to beat them. The Taihape Golfers' Effort compares more than favourably with that of the Wanganui golfers who raised a slightly larger amount. Had the weather conditions on Saturday been more favourable there is little doubt that some £lO to £2O more would have been raised through the medium of the afternoon tea, golf putting and other means.
The amounts received were as follows:—Football match £9 0s 3, pictures £26 5s 6d, golf putting £6 Is 6d, Red Cross Shop £34 5s 101 d, afternoon tea £4 6s 6d, doll £l6 Is, bottle guessing £4 3s Hihitahr Gun Club (per Mr E. G. Ozanne) £4, Wanagaehu Road Board £lO, cow £3O 6s, bottles (approximately) £SO. The ladies in charge of the Red Cross Shop—Mesdames Neagle, H. O'Callaghan, T. Bradlej-, and Miss Q. Murphy—did very good business as the takings will show. The wretched weather conditions prevented afternoon tea being served out in the band rotunda as intended, but the adverse
conditions were made the best of by Misses Spooner and their assistants, Misses Rich, Gillespie, and Kennedy, and, considering the difficulties presented this important item in the proceedings passed off successfully. A baby's coatee made by Mrs W. V. Kelsall was won by Miss Violetßason whilst the name of the dressed doll, presented by Mrs H. Hesketh, was guessed correctly by Mr J. De Luen, Mrs A. Smith, and Misses Haase, M. Beattie, E. Stent ? and Etta Spooner. In the draw for the winner Miss Etta Spooner became the possessor. ,
In the Men's Golf Putting Competition, Messrs G. Wheeler, B. McNamara, and A. M. Ryan tied with 7, and will play off. The Ladies' Putting Competition was won by Mrs H. Hesketh with 8.
The winner of the Bottle Guessing Competiton will be announced later. The Golfers publicly thank all those who helped the Red Cross Fund, per the Effort and by which the fund will benefit so handsomely The help given was so generous and liberal and the helpers so numerous that it is hoped a general vote of thanks from the Club will suffice.
