PARLIAMENT’S PROGRAMME.
SOME.: IMPORTANT BILLS. PENALISING WEALTHY SHIRKERS. WELLINGTON, August 28. The Financial debate having been concluded, the Government has the way clear for the most important bills of the session. They will come forward in following .order: Finance Bill, Licensing Amendment Bill, Military Service Act Amendment Bill, Pensions Act Amendment Bill.
As Cabinet has not finally disposed of the Finance Bill, it is impossible to say definitely what penalty it provides for wealthy people who neglect to take up an adequate proportion of the war loan. Rumour has it that treble income tax be proposed. The only thing certain is that the Government will amke it urtprolitable for anyone to hold back large sum s from the war loan to get higher interest on ‘ mortgages. *
The Licensing Bill is to deal with early closing of hotel bars. The Military Service Act Amendment will make it unprofitable for amendments to enable the Act to be worked smoothly in connection with the Second Division, and permit the State to use Home Service men in any direction it, desires in.national interests. Probably there will be no reference to an earlier age of enlistment, as the Governmnt needs no further statutory power to accept ab voluntary recruits men over 19 ? which i s as it will go in view of public opin.on
