GOLF NOTES.

The games in the third round of the Men’s Senior Championship of the Taihape Golf Club resulted: J. Evans beat G. Bray, J. A. Champion beat W. V. Kelsall, H Hesketh beat P. E. Wakeman j R. A Andrews beat D. Neagle. Some close games were played. Champion and Kelsall being all square at 18 holes, and a nineteenth hole was necessary; Hesketh won on the last putt from Wakeman. In the Men’s Junior Championship H. A. O’Callaghan beat C. O. Gibbs on the eighteenth hole, and T. Bradley beat G W. Plummer. An interesting game will take place between Bradley and O’Callaghan for the final of the Junior Championship. In the Ladies’ Competition last week end much interest was centred as the result of the 1917 Ladies’ Championship and winner of the Sherlaw Bracelet wat at stake. Very good scores the handicap scores of both Mrs O’Callaghan and Miss O. Murphy beating the previous best for the season (46 by Miss Merritt). The best cards handed in were: Mrs O’Callaghan 58 —14—44, Miss Murphy 59 —14—45, Mr s Neagle 62—9—53, Miss M. Spooner 5s —Z Mrs Powell 72 —16 —56, Miss V. Evans 88 —20 —68.

The best averages for the three competitions for the Sherlaw T Bracelet were: Mrs O’Callaghan 50, 48, 44 —47 1-3; Mrs Neagle 49, 48, 53—50; Miss O. Murphy 59, 48, 45 —50 1-3; Mrs Powell 61, 50, 56—55 2-3. Mrs O’Callaghan wa s therefore the winner and being a 1917 recruit is to be congratulated on the steady improvement in play. Miss Murphy, who is also a beginner, has done exceedingly well, and should be heard of in the future. For the Ladies’ Champfonship the best averages were: Miss M. Spoone--59, 57, 58; Mrs Neagle 61, 59, 60; Mrs 6’ Callaghan 64, 58, 61; Miss Murphy 64, 59, 61J. Miss’ M. Spooner therefore retains Chamiponship, and is the lady champion of the Club for 1917, with Mrs D. Neagle as a runner up. No player will begrudge Miss Spooner the honour as she practices and her handicap is such that apart from championship games, there i s little chance of a win. In latter contests to have secured a victory, Miss Spooner would require to beat bogey on each occasion.
