GERMANY AND THE PAPAL NOTE VORWAERT’S NAIVE SUGGESTION Received 8.50. V - LONDON, August 21. The Daily Chronicle’s Amsterdam correspondent states that Dr. Machaclis’ replies to the‘Papal Note before the main committee of the Reichstag on Tuesday is expected to be favourable. The Committee was called on the urgent request of the Centre Party, which is expected to demand a definite statement regarding Germany’s war aims, especially in the West, particularly Belgium. The Centre Party claim support equal to the July 19th peace resolution. “Vorwaerts” expects the Entente Powers will refuse to negotiate, therefore Germany should be favourable, enabling her to say peace w r as impossible, because her enemies wish to destroy the Fatherland. .THE ALLIES’ REPLY.TO POPE’S NOTE.

The New York Times’ Washington despatch says it is not believed the United States will participate in the Conference of the Allies regarding the answer to the Pope’s Ntoe, but America is making a separate reply based on the Allies’ decision.
