FAMOUS FRENCH JOURNALIST.
No French journalist is better known to English readers than is M. Marcel Hutin, the daily contributor (to the Echo de Paris, whose bulletins are largely reproduced in the British press and are, indeed, cabled to almost every part of the world. M. Hutin's authority is recognised, and he is quoted every day with respect. He is, indeed, from a popular point of view, one of the greatest war successes of French journalism. Before the war he occupied a position on the Echo de Paris, similar, but not quite analogous, to that of a political correspondent in England. In such work he became known as a man of enterprise and resource. He was fortunate in being connected with the Echo de Paris, because that journal's support of military preparation, nda, in particualr, Three Years' Law, brought him into close contact with the military authorities, so that when war broke out his sources of information wer e valuable. One of his greatest scores was on July 31, 1914, when he announced that Great Britain would stand by Franco. It was probably only deduction but it was true, and the amazingly accurate prophecies which Hutin subsequently published made the Echo de Paris one of the greatest war successes in French journalism. He has frequently given English as well as to French readers' the first inkling of impending moves in the East, and his versatility in this direction has extended to all other fronts. He does not write articles but puts what he has to say into comparatively few pithy sentences
