Thirty of the clergy of the diocese of Worcester are working as mechanics in munition factories, 110 are school teachers and clerks, and 50 are ploughing and sowing. Out of a total of 604 diocesan clergy, 482 are now engaged on work arising out of the war. When a Yorkshire vicar underwent an examination in bankruptcy, he told the Eegistrar that from one moneylender he had received £l5B, repaid £6O, and was still owing £230 12s With a wife and six children he had £l3O a year to live on. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, Mr.- J. McGregor said that he was of opinion that harvesting was of more importance than shearing, and that it was essential to organise in connection with this industry during the remainder of the war.
America is now proposing to mix 15 per cent of ground cotton seed with ordinary wheat flour. By this means it is estimated that a saving of 115,000,000 bushels of wheat a year can be made and double the nutriment of the bread. Another great economy scheme is the utilisation of fish hides as shoe leather.

The rainfall in Auckland has been excessive of late, and some of the local bodies are faced with a large repairing expenditure of money for repairing damage to roads, footpaths, stc. In one part of a certain suburb the flood water w T as nearly up to the tops of the fences, and a boat was rowed over the lawn and flower garden of one of the residences.

Sarah Blanchard (80), an old age pensioner, who lived alone in a hut on Glenmore Road, Rockhampton, and who was found dead at the foot of her bed, discovered 100 sovereigns, 152 half sovereigns, £8 10s in notes, £8 7s 3d in silver and copper, and a. small bag of gold dust. The neighbours used to supply her with comforts.
A return published in the Gazette gives the estimated population of New Zealand on June 30, exclusive of residents of Cook and other Pacific Islands and Maoris, at 1,096,240, of which number 540,861 arc males and 555,379 are females. The Maori population at the time of the 1916 census was 49,776, and the population of the Cook and Pacific Islands was' 12,797, and these totals bring the estimated population of the Dominion up to 1,159,813. i
"Your sugar has come," said the postman with a smile, as he delivered a parcel of 31b of sugar at a South London home recently. ' 'And there's 4d to pay on it, please." A glance at. the label showed the astonished householder that this quite unexpected gift had come all the way from New Zealand, 13,000 miles <away, and that it was sent by a relative. It was a somewhat roundabout and expensive way of getting a parcel of sugar to South London. The Returned Soldiers' Ball Commute have not been able to secure the loan of flags from the usual sources for decorating the Town Hall on the evening of the ball, therefore they will be grateful to shopkeepers, business men and others who have flags if they will be good enough to lend them. Anyone desirous of so assisting towards the success of the Returned Soldiers' movement are asked to be good enough to leave the flags or bunting at the Town Hall on Thursday, after pencilling their names thereon.
