GERMANY’S TROUBLES.
CHALLENGE TO DEMOCRACY MICHAELIS’ APPOINTMENT LONDON, August 7. The whole of the German press is attacking 1 Dr. Michaelis’ Ministerial appointments. Liberal and Social Democatric papers regard the appointments as a challenge to Parliamentary Government, and accuse Michaelis of cowardice in deferring action until the Reichstag adjourned. The Pan-Germans are angry believing that Herr Juhlman, one of the new appointments, favours a rapprochement with England. THE REICHSTAG PEACE .RESOLUTION. OPPOSED BY GERMAN WORKERS. AMSTERDAM, August 8. Thirty thousand yorkers at Dortmund unanimously disapproved of the Reichstag’s peace resolution. An agitation against the resolution is being organised throughout the the Empire. SOCIALIST LEADER DYING. AMSTERDAM, August 7. Liebknecht is reported to be dying in a prison hospital.
THE SLIMY HUN. Received 8.45 AMSTERDAM, August 8. Speaking at Augsburg, Fehrenbacs (the mover of the Reichstag peace resolution ,on 20th July) admitted that the political leaders had concocted the resolution at Schiedemann’s suggestion, in order to enable the Socialists to reassure their constituents and cause them to vote the war credits. RIOTS IN POLAND. GERMANS FEAR REVOLT Received 111.10 LAUSANNE, August 8. Numerous riots are taking place in Poland. Germans, fearing an organised revolt, have sent back all German women, including the wives of high officers. GERMAN WAR PREPARATIONS SECRET TUNNEL IN ITALY Received 111.10 ROME, August 8. The Italian Government has requisitioned the Aden Hotel, which was formerly German-owned. The authorities have discovered a secret tunnel to the Villa of Roses, Von Buelow’s residence before the war. It is believed this tunnel enabled him to confer with neutrals who desired secrecy.
JEWISH REGIMENTS FORMED FORTY THOUSAND IN CAMP. Received 8.45 LONDON, August 8. The War Office has completed ar rangenuuts to enrol Jewish regiments, largely of Russian Jews. It is estimated 40,000 men are avafaoie. They will be established in camps in the environs of London, to safeguard racial jnd religious observances. IN CHINA CHINA TO FIGHT TIENTSIN, August 7. The Acting Premier has conferred with Allied diplomats regarding an Allied loan to China. The Chinese Government, is making the fullest military preparations.
