DR. BARNADO'S DAY.

In acknowledging the receipt of £Bl 8s lid from Mrs. Boyd as the result of her recent afternoon and concert in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes, the New Zealand organising secretary of that popular institution points out that the amount is sufficient, to maintain four healthy boys or girls in the Homes for twelve months at a cost of £lB each (prior to the war the cost was £l6 only), and a fifth for a period of 27 weeks. If devoted to the Naval Training School in Norfolk, the contributions from Taihape would maintain and train four little "handy men" for twelve months. The secretary also pays a warm tribute to the labour and generosity of the many friends whose combined efforts enabled Mrs. Boyd to report such a splendid response. The number of "old boys" known to be serving in the Royal Navy, the Army, and mercantile marine now stands at over 9500, and is being added to daily. At least ten have won commissions.
