SHIPPING.

NATIONAL CONTROL. LONDON, July 30. The Ministry for Shipping -has issued a detailed statement showing the sacrifices incurred by British shipping in connection with the war. This shows that 50 per cent, of the tonnage previously engaged in distant trading to foreign countries and the Dominions was brought Home, fourteen milions was of ocean-going shipping, serving Britain and Ireland. At present six and a-half million tons is engaged in* war service. A very substantial amount of shipping is assigned to meet the needs of the Allies, both in the matter of munitions and foodstuffs. The situation has now reaCjhed a stage necessitating complete control of all shippng, in order to ensure the best national employment of every vessel and to divert to the nation the high profits arising from war conditions.
