EASTERN FRONT.
THE FALL OF TARNOPOL. GREAT STOCK OF STORES DESTROYED. LONDON, July 24. The "Lokal Anzieger's" war correspondent states that stores valued at a million sterling were destroyed at Tarnopol, which was th e main base in the south-western districts. The city is still burning. Some units" stubbornly resisted the Germans. THE TRAITOROUS ELEVENTH. LONDON, July 25. The "Morning Post's" Petrograd correspondent says the 11th Army, in collapsing, lost large numbers of prisoners and guns. The. extent of the front affected is from 30 to 40 miles. Northward 'of the abandoned district, everything holds tight. To the south changes are being made to secure the exposed flank. Russia has made good greater breaches than this, which is a political not a fighting failure, and may prove a blessing in disguise. The British naval arnioured cars operated alongside and southwards of the traitorous Ilth Army, and will probably assist to hold the threatened flank, or cover the retreat.
MORE TREACHERY. STANISLAU BEING EVACUATED. LONDON, July 25. Wireless Russian Official. Southwest of Dvinsk our detachments occupied the Germans' positions astride the Dvinsk'-Vein railway. Subsequently whole units voluntarily returned to their original trenches. A number of units disobeyed commands. The 24th Division acted heroically, and lost heavily. The gallantry of the officers was noteworthy.
The enemy occupied a height to the northward of Bogush, in the direction
of Vilna. Officers had the utmost difficulty in restraining great numbers of men from withdrawing to the rear. The enemy crossed the Sereth in the I region of Mikulice and occupied Volyamazoveekay. The enemy are continuing their offensive between the Sereth and the Strypa, and have occupied three villages We are holding the line Gaivoronka-Monastir-Jiska, north-west of Buczacz.
We are retiring easterly southward of the Dneister.
Stanislau is being evacuated. A successful raid was made on Domukpatak on the Roumanian front. Torpedoers co-operated with the artillery and bombarded Tircoli, on the Black Sea, and destroyed depots and barracks.
BITTER FIGHTING ON WHOLE FRONT. GERMANS CLAIM SUCCESS EVERYWHERE. LONDON, July 24. German official. —There have been bitter fights in our favour on the whole East front from the Baltic to the Black Sea. The Russians twice vainly attacked on a wide front near Jacobstardt ana six Russian divisions five times attacked south-west of Dvinsk. After tough hand-to-hand fighting, the Russians withdrew with terrible losses. The renewed Russian attacks failed on a A\-ide front at Krevo, which we again hold. Eight Russian divisions attacked southwards of Smorgon. Only remnants returned.
The strategical effect of our operations in East Galicia is becoming powerful. The enemy are retreating from the Northern Carpathian fron-
tier, pressing forward" on a front of 250 kilometres from the Sereth to'the wooded Carpathians. We forced a crossing of the Sereth southward of Tarnopol.
We repulsed desperate Russian mass attacks near Premboivla.
We advanced Beyond the Podhetjce and Solotivinska. The booty has not yet been ascertained. Several eli-
sions report 3000 prisoners each. They have also captured many heavy guns and railway trucks tilled witr foodstuffs, proving the enemy's precipitate retreat. The Archduke Josef's north wing has joined in the movement. Russo-Roumanians attempted to advance on a wide sector between the Trotus and Putna alley, but were driven back. Fresh fights developed. Mackensen broke down the RussoRoumanians' attack along the Putna and Sereth. AIRCRAFT CON 4 STRUCTION. Received 8.50. NEW YORK, July 25.
