WORLD’S LARGEST STEAMSHIP.
By a strange trick of fate, the merchant marine of the United States now includes the largest, steamship in the world. The Vaterland, of the HamburgAmerican line, was interned with other vessels in New York, at the beginning of the war, and was among the vessels .seized by the United States authorities; The -,Vaterlan.d- is 950 ft. long, 100 feet wide, has a displacement of 65,000 tons, is equipped with quadruple screws and capable of maintaining a speed of 24 knots. ‘ln her. interior fittings, appointmentsiand conveni~ ences, the steamship is a perfect marvel, and was one of the favourite boats on the New York-Hamburg run. Her engines and machinery have been disnbled, and it. will take several months to have them placed in running order, after which she will probably be placed in the New York-Liverpool service.
