A SKETCH FROM LIFE.
AN ANSWER
Your sketch of life I read o'er twice, And pondered and wondered and won-
| dered tTill I fell asleep from life so deep, To dream of the "3ays I squandered. I left my home, yes, far to roam, For life to me was uneasy; I came to the Isles of sunny smiles, Just to don a suit that was greasy. I've polished glass of every class; I've stacked the good old "Kaka," I've played at pool, I've dtank my full Till I could dance a Haka! From my West-end bunk to the old Main Trunk
Lay many a path unknown; But a genial heart can avoid every
dart The winds of life are blowing. I've gone my waj', needless to say, Helping or meeting another, And none can smack the heart of
Jack Save hitting at a brother. Yes, it's nice to find that fortune's kind, And one can draw a ticket; B'ut it s no fun to carry a gun To save Bill Massey's wicket. But there it is, I'll fight? for bliss Though shaky be my aim— I'll make it hot—someone I'll pot, To say I played the game. Publish this rhyme for a modern time, For Britain is a winner; A warrior bold you said —I'm told — To polish off a dinner. My heart does Boil for my native soil, For the circle there's not broken, And a good hand-shake e'er the field
stake Will leave behind a token. Farewell Taihap (e) Good friends and tap, I"ll do my best for, you; If it's left to me, I'm sure to Jee That you'll be carried through. "P. J."
