HEAD OF THE RUSSIAN ARMIES.
A brief sketch of General Brussiloff, commander-in-chief of the Russian armies, is given in Russian Court Memoirs recently published by a Russian. “The hero of the present moment is General Brussiloff,” the author wrote in August 1916. “He has honestly merited his widespread fame. General Brussiloff possesses most of the qualtics of a great commander. He is a born leader. He was unbounded ascendancy over the soldiers under his command, who look up to him with adoration, mingled with awe, and unlimited confidence, The general has the rare power of electrifying his men and inciting them to feats of the greatest daring. General Brusiloff was brought up in the Pages Cadet Corps in Pctrograd, and afterwards entered a dragoon regiment quartered at Iver. As a young officer he attracted the notice of the late In-spector-General of Cavalry, Toutolmine, who gave him an influential helping hand. Nearly the whole of his career was spent in the officers’ cavalry school in Petrograd, and subsequently he succeeded General Soukhomlinoff, the former War Minister, as director of this school. Before the war he commanded an army corps in the district of Odessa. He has been married twice. His first wife died, leaving a son, an officer of the Horse Grenadiers of the Guards, at present on one of the fronts. His second wife is of a good Russian family. ’ ’
