In the Magistrate's Court at Wellington yesterday, the Union Company was fined £2O for employing a Second Division reservist who was not enrolled. There were extenuating circumstances hence only the minimum fine was imposed.

In the House on Thursday, Mr. Witty asked th e Prime Minister if there was any truth in a report that some of the seventeen overseas ships to be loaded in New Zealand had been diverted. Mr. Massy replied that no information to that effect had reached him. He had, however, received an official communication from England on the subject of shipping during the last day or two. The Imperial authorities were not very optimistic about keeping up the supply of ships required for the Australasian trade. "I cannot go further than this, and I have had no notice about the ships referred to by the member," add,ed Mr. Masey.

Condemned beef is being sterilized and sold for human consumption in Scottish towns. • An indignant Scot has written to his local paper suggesting that the sterilized meat should be sent to the German concentration camps instead of giving these the first pick of thet fresh meat.
"Are you an expert shearer ?" was a question put to a witness at the sitting of the Military Appeal Board in Wanganui. "I shear a little," said the appellant. Pressed for further particulars, he said he could shear 2tfo sheep per day with the blades, and the Board agreed that he was an expert shearer.
A cabled item which appeared in a Sydney paper last week states" that Reuter's correspondent at Uetrograd serlt out the news that a message from the ex-Czar intimates that the Royal family wished to subscribe to Russia's Liberty Loan! This conveys two suggestions: That Nicholas Romanoff bears no malice against those who dethroned him —and that probably he is glad to be relieved of his responsibilities. Quite easy lies the head that wore a crown.
At the Borough Council meeting last night, when the appointment of a small committee to deal w/ith applications for the position of Town Clerk was being discussed Cr Joblin mentioned that when a vacancy on the staff of the Hospital Board occurred, the Board as a whole considered the applications, some 124 in number. The Mayor said he gave them credit for more brains. Cr. Joblin thought the Board had a duty to perform and did not desire to shirk it. He presumed the Taihapc Council had not a monopoly of brains.
