DR. BARNARDO’S HOMES.
GARDEN FETE AND CONCERT. A very successful afternoon was X&eld on Wednesday at Mrs. Boyd’s house, when Dr. Barnardo’s Homes by £6l 3s 2d. This was those who worked so hard for tlSßgood cause dared to hope for. The help given the committee by Mesdames James, Oldham, Sinclair, McGregor, Edlin, “Madam Teacups?’’ and Miss Mcßae was greatly appreciated, as was the assistance given by Messrs McGregor and Wheeler, One and all worked hard to ensure success, both before and on the day. Mesdames James and Oldham had charge of the cake stall—this assured the cakes being of the best. Mrs. Sinclair, assisted by Mrs. Absolute, ran the sweet stall. Thai these ladies had been busy “getting ready” was easily seen by the fine lot of sweets for sale. Mrs. McGregor had Miss Mcßae assisting with the flower stall, which was loaded with beautiful flowers procured from Auckland and Palmerston. The fancy stall was in the hands of Mrs. Little, who reported business. Tea was “on” in the -'dining-room, where Mesdames Eaton, De Latour and Dymock, with their
assistants, were kept after which “Madam Teacups” was interviewed. Golf putting was under the control ,of Mrs. Kiernan, the competition being very keen, both with the ladies and gentlemen. Mrs. Dymock kindly donated the ladies’ prizes and Mr. D. Neagle the gentlemen’s. Mrs. Edlin provided the music in her usual able manner. Mrs. R. W. Smith, with Mrs, Totman, were file judges in the camisole competition, the winner being Miss Lett. The length of tape in the bottle was 77 inches, Messrs C. G. Wilson and Lyuuon guessing the correct length. These gentlemen decided to draw for it, the winner proving to be Mr. Wilson. Many visitors from Mangaweka helped to swell the numbers, to whom the thanks of the committee are due. The succssful day ended with a popular concert in the Parish Hall. This was entirely organised by Miss Oldham. All thanks are due to her and her many helpers for their hard work, which undoubtedly resulted in a good sum for the funds of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes. The total sum taken oiuthe day is not yet available, the concert tickets being all in. The afternoon’s is made up as follows;—Sweet stall, £5 3s; cake stall, £8 Is 9d; fancy stall, £26 9s 6d; flower stall, £5 18s 2d; gate money, £5; golf putting, £1 17s 6d; “Teacups” 12s 9d; Mr. C. J. Wilson, IE 5; Mrs. Rogers, £1; Mrs. R. W. Smith, 10s; Mrs. R. Totman, 10s; Mr. Overton, 10s; Parkinson, 2s; Mrs. Whitehead, 6s; Mrs. Barsby 2s6d. Total; £6l 3s 2d.
