WIRELESS IN THE WAR.
HEROISM OF OPERATORS. LONDON, July 5. Many stories of the heroism of wireless operators were told by the chairman of the meeting of the Marconi International Marine Company. Altogether during tho war 333 had been .saved, from sinking ships, 45 had been drowned, 29 injured, and 19 had been made prisoners. In one instance an operator, after his vessel had been torpedoed, went to the captain for instructions as to the position of the ship. The captain gave : him the position, but warmed him not to go down to the wireless room, as it would be most dangerous. Moreover, the crew were leaving the vessel. Nevertheless, the operator returned to the room, and sent off the S.O.S. signal, gave the position, and received a reply. His action resulted in the survivors being picked up the following morning. Another case was that of an operator, who, in reporting that his vessel was sinking, cooly said: “I am uninjured, except for a few bruises, and am feeling pretty fair, considering that this is the second time in two months that I have been torpedoed.” In another ease an operator went down with his ship. After the crew / had left he remained, signalling until the last.
