SOLDIERS ON THE LAND.

SECTIONS TAKEN BY 319 MEN. SATISFACTORY RESULTS. Wellington, July 13. A report on the settlement of returned soldiers on the land was presented to Parliament to-c}fay. The results are stated to have been on the whole very satisfactory. The majority of the soldiers who have gone on the land are working in a manner that gives great promise of success. Some have been most successful already, but a few have shown that they have neither the will nor capacity to succeed. The percentage of failures is not, however, higher than it would in ordinary settlement.

During the past year applications for land were fairly numerous, 400 soldiers having applied for specific sections, Of these , 319 were provided with 143,524 acres, ISO settlers being placed upon Crown lands and 131 upon land acquired under the Land for Settlement 'Act. A total of 124 soldiers selected land in the Wellington district, ,72 in the Auckland district and 57 in the Hawke’s Bay district. In the majority of cases soldiers have preferred to settle in the North Island, several settlements of good land in the South having failed to find applicants.
