THE RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE. CONFIDENCE IN THE GOVERNMENT. PETEOGRAD, July 13. j The Moscow Council of Workmen and Soldiers discussed the now offensive, and expressed confidence in the Government by 391 to 232. M. Scobclcff, Labour Minister, appealed to the workers to remedy the country’s economic disorganisation by increasing the output of produce. PETEOGRAD .THREATENED. PETEOGRAD. July 13. The Nordsud Agency states that deserters from the Dvina front state Ihat the Germans arc preparing to attack Petrograd. ANOTHER VILLAGE OCCUPIED. LONDON, July 14. The High Commissioner reports:-* Russian official: The village of Novica south-west of Kulusz, was occupied after fighting in the neighbourhood of Kalusz. Two enemy attacks attempting to dislodge us at Kalusz were repulsed. , » ANOTHER SUBSTANTIAL HAUL. — LONDON, July 14. Wireless Russian official.-:- During Wednesday’s battles we captured ten officers and 850 men (mostly Germans) also five heavy guns and ten machine guns. A GERMAN COMMUNIQUE. LONDON, July 14. Wireless German official.—Fighting activity is lively near Smorgen, also at Sohtchara, westward of Luck. Futile Russian attacks were made at several places on the Lomnica line. The Archduke Joseph and Mackensen repulsed several advances. *
AUSTRIAN COMMANDER DEPOSED. LONDON, July 14. Marcel Hutin, in the “Echo de Paris,” states that Hindenburg and Ludendorff have relieved Youermollo, the Austrian commander. SOLIDARITY ACHIEVED. PETEOGRAD, July 13. The Workmen and Soldiers’ Council was converted to the Ministerial policy at a conference at Molileff with Brusiloff and other generals. Kerghky declared that the army was entitled to demand more assistance from organisations at the rear. A member of the Council, addressing Brusiloff, said: Your presence brought us solidarity, but SS per cent, of the officers at Headquarters obstruct work and create huge counter-revolutionary manifestations. Brusiloff, replying, said: I have taken an oath to serve the democracy. There cannot be a revolution. I will not allow it. All the responsible positions are now filled with officers accepting the revolution’s views. Everyone must concentrate to save the countary. ” AMSTERDAM, July 13. The All Russia, Supiply Committee is introducing meat tickets in all towns and villages, also rationing clothing materials.
KORNILOFF’S SUCCESS. ON THE ROAD TO LEMBERG. LONDON, July 14. The “Morning Post’s 7 ’ Petrograd correspondent says Kornilioff's cavalry continue to push with irresistible dash and the infantry are moving by forced marches to Lemberg. Remnants of the enemy which opposed Korniloff are fleeing panic-stricken. The country is ideal for cavalry, in which Russia is particularly strong. An Austrian corps at Brzezany was also beaten to rags, the remnants being entirely withdrawn. German divisions hastily replaced Austrians on other fronts who were temporarily holding a Russian attack in this sector, though their losses were enormous. Between July Ist and July 7th in the Brzezany sector, 30,000 Germans were killed or wounded, apart from IS,OOO who were prisonered. Korniloff 7 s sweeping successes to the southward have already turned the Brzezany defences. The Germans are reduced to attacking in solid formation, hence the heavy losses.
DRIVING THE ENEMY BACK. LONDON, July 14. Wireless Russian official. —AVe crossed to the left bank of the Lomnica and captured the heights, driving back the enemy north-west of Chilus. We occupied the villages of Studzianka and Podhorki, and are now engaging the enemy who are protecting the crossings of the Lomnica south-west of Kalusz in the direction of Rozniatov and Dolina.
\ TOWARDS THE CARPATHIANS. LEMBERG ROAD OPENED. PETEOGRAD, July 14. Wireless.—Russians are pursuing the enemy’s right, which is retiring towards the Carpathians. The route to Lemberg and Stryj has been” opened. One Austrian corps lost its entire artillery. b ‘ THE GERMAN- REPORT. LONDON, July 14. German communique.— Lively fighting continues near Dvinsk and' Smorgen and there is artillerying in the Brzezany sector. Rain is restricting fighting south of the Dneister. * EX-CZAEINA ILL. Received 8.45. PETROGRAD, July 15. The Commander of Alexander Palace reports that the Ex-Czarina is unable to walk, her legs being swollen as the result of a heart affection.
GOOD EFFECT OF RUSSIAN SUCCESSES. SOCIALISTS IN FAVOUR OF THE WAR. Received 9,5. . PETROGRAD, July 15. The progress of the offensive is favourably influencing the political situation. The leaders of the bulk of the Socialists are at the German Socialists not supporting their peace terms, and are now' advocating a continuation of the offensive. FLEEING BEFORE THE RUSSIAN ADVANCE. VIENNA AND BUDAPEST CROWDED WITH REFUGEES. Received 9.30. LONDON,; July 15. The Daily Telegraph’s correspondent at Rome states the Austrian reports show that the population of Galicia has panicked, and thousands of families are fleeing from the interior. Vienna and Budapest are crowded with refugees. Divisions of Cossacks are ravaging the country and the towns of Dolina and Strew j.
GERMANY’S INTERNAL TROUBLES. THE GERMAN CHANCELLOR. LONDON, July 14. German official. —The Kaiser has accepted the resignation. of Herr von Bethmann-Hollweg and ap.ointed Dr. Mic-haelis (Under-Secretary of Finance and Prussian Commissioner of Food Control). RESIGNATION OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED. Received 10.15. LONDON, July 15. A Berlin wireless announces Hollweg’s resignation. Dr. Miehaelis succeeds him. AUSTRIAN INTERFERENCE ALLEGED. Received 9.5. AMSTERDAM, July 15. The Lokal Anzeiger and Der Tag have been suspended Tor declaring that Hollweg’s retention was due to interference from Vienna, which does not desire von Buelow. The Lokal Anzeiger declares the Austrian Government must not interfere in Germany’s internal affairs. Von B'uelow is the only man able to extricate Germany from _ the ditch wherein Hollweg has pTtmged her. T-he Zeitung learns from an authorl tative source that Erzberger’s action was due to the Vatican’s request. The pope is anxious to be a peace mediator.
RUPTURE WITH ARGENTINA. Received 11.20. BUENOS AYRES, July 15. Argentina’s severance of relations with Germany is expected hourly. The report that the German minister sneered at the torpedoed Argentine ships as "rat traps.” Coupled With Germany’s failure to answer the ultimatum cabled on July 3rd, and sth, has aroused the bitterest feeling. Miguel Ortiz, former Minister of the Interior and other prominent Argentinians, speaking at a dinner to French veterans, said Argentina would soon be aligned with the Allies. AN ALLIED FESTIVAL. Received, J 0.15...15.. PARIS, July 15. The festival celebration was of unprecedented splendour. Half a million persons witnessed the parade of troops representing 134 regiments, and especially ovated the' mainred troops, showering flowers on‘English and American officers.
