LONDON, July 15.

The Daily Express correspondent interviewed King Alfonso, who emphasised that Spain must remain neutral to the' end unless attacked. “Our relations with Britain and France are excellent,” he said, “but “pain is able to supply them'wilh material if England will supply us with coal and the United States send us cottdn. Everything is perfect. Some Spaniards admired the pre-war reputation of the German army, but pro-Germans were no-wise anti-Ally.” Referring to the crisis, Alfonso said Spain was suffering from financial indigestion and resultant industrial unrest. The situation was complicated by the patriotic movement of the army which wants to see money voted for the army utilised in the best possible way. The army demanded to be modernised, but it was untrue that discipline and loyalty were impaired. Another complication arose through the Catalonians demanding a sort 6T Home Rule.’ The Government is prepared to satisfy just demands in all parts of Spain, but the crisis cannot be settled before the end of the war. He thought the war would last a long time. It was impossible for him to offer mediation after the recent declarations by Lloyd George and M. Ribot. The war would cause an immense upheaval in all countries, and in future "Governments would lean towards State Socialism. Alfonso regretted that Spanish reformers, formerly pro-monarch-ists, now side with Republicans, saying he belonged to past ages. “But,” he asked, “is there a more modern king than 1?”
