President Wilson has definitely warned mine owners, manufacturers, and shipowners that the Government intended to fix •the prices of the>'products during the war. Evaders will be regarded as guilty of favouring the enemy.
SOUTH AFRICA. IN EAST AFRICA. ENEMY FORCES BEATEN ON ALL FRONTS. LONDON, July 11. An East African official report says: The enemy’s right flank detachment north-west of Kilwa, has retreated from Lunya to Mayonga. Simultaneously, our troops came in contact with his centre at Ukuli. Our forces on the 7th converged in three columns on Myonregi, Kcnnna Hill and Vdangwi, against the Germans upon a front from Ukuli to Mayonga. All our columns were successful. The operations wore carried out in difficult country. The maximum advance was thirteen miles. Another column drove the enemy across the enemy across the Ruipa river and established themselves between an enemy detachment at Mofua and his main position further north. Our Eeikuju forces pressed back the Germans on. the Songea-Luvale road, enveloped their rearguard and drove it northwards toward Mahenge. A column of West Africans advanced without opposition thirty-five miles from the Rufiji river in the direction of Misswega.
GERMANS LOSE LAST FOOTHOLD. LONDON, July 12. Reuter announces that the Liberian Government has ordered the deportation of all Germans and the complete ' winding-up of German businesses in Liberia. This was the last German political and commercial foothold in West Africa. , Nearly all the exports, including valuable o.il products, went direct to Hamburg and Bremen befoi'e the war. SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS REPUBLICIAN PROPAGANDA DENOUNCED. CAPETOWN, July 11. V At the Congress of the South African party, Mr. Malan, Minister of Education, emphasised the danger of~a Republican propaganda, which, he said, might probably lead to Civil war. Referring to the attitude of the Nationalists, and the anti-war party, he said there could be no reproachment between them and his party while the war lasted. INCIDENTS OF THE WAE. ; PRICE OF BREAD RAISED. Received 11.40. AMSTERDAM, July 12. - The flour prices fixed for the new German -harvest further raises the price of bread. BROTHERS IN ARMS. LONDON, July 11. Lieutenant Adien Chavasse, the youngest son of the Bishop of Liverpool, was shot while on patrol duty. Captain Chavasse has been awarded the Victoria Cross. He made five unsuccessful attempts .to bring his brother in. On the last occasion he reached the spot, but failed to find his brother, who, it is believed the Germans had removed.
