THE RUSSIAN CAMPAIGN HUNS CONCENTRATING ON ROUMANIAN FRONT. TO PROTECT CROPS. GERMANY AND AUSTRIA ALARMED. Received 8.45 a.m. BERNE, July 10. Notwithstanding the Russian offensive in Galicia the Austro-Germans are concentrating large reinforcements at the Roumanian front, believing the real offensive will be the southernmost sectors, whero the Russo-Roumanians arc in great strength. Much anxiety prevails in Germany and Austria because the successful Russo-Roumanian offensive might entail the loss of the Roumanian and Hungarian crops.
RUSSIAN ADVANCE .CONTINUES. MORE PRISONERS AND GUNS CAPTURED. LONDON, July 10. The High Commissioner reports; — Russian official.—Korniloff’s offensive continues, in spite of energetic resistance and stubborn counter attacks. Fresh villages have been taken, one thousand prisoners, three field guns, many trench mortars, machine guns and other material. RUSSIAN SUCCESS WEST OF STANISLAU. 7,000 PRISONERS CAPTURED. LONDON, July 9. A Russian official message says:— Westward of Stanislau on Sunday General Korniloff captured several villages,, 131 officers, 7.000 men. and IS guns, including 12 heavy cannon. He also took many machine-guns. ENEMY'S FOREMOST POSITIONS CAPTURED.
General Korniloff attacked Psercite, the enemy’s foremost and most important position westward of Stanislao. We advanced and captured the villages of Jezujol, Csezov, Javelcjie Rybno anu Stalyeysiec. Cavalry immediately pursued, reaching the Likva river. ENEMY ADMIT BEING PRESSED BACK. LONDON, July 10. German communique’ There were fresh battles near Stanislau. Strong Russian attacks pressed us back in the direction of the wooded heights of Czarnas. German reserves brought the thrust to a standstill. Several Russian attacks in the Carpathians failed. Austrian commurijique: The enemy attempted a decisive blow, with superior forces, against the road from Stanislau to Kolostz. Those who penetrated our advanced trenches were ejected. A counter-attack by strong enemy forces was also repulsed in the Strubjrca Valley, near *Muta. ANOTHER OFFENSIVE BEGINNING LONDON, July 10. A telegram from Minsk describes the beginning of military activity at several part of the front, including an intense artillery duel in the KrevoSmorgen region.
PINSK RAILWAY STATION BOMBED. LONDON, July lb. Russian communique: We bombed the railway station at Pinsk, causing conflagrations. Pinsk is an important junction in the Pripet marshes district, due east of Brest Litovsk. RUSSIAN MUTINEERS. LONDON, July 10. The “Times” Odessa correspondent states that a bod’y of Russian soldiers refused to participate in the offensive, and entrenched themselves on the outskirts of a forest. Artillery fired shrapnel, and a cavalry corps surrounded the mutineers, who v laid down their arms. GERMANY’S INTERNAL TROUBLES. KAISER’S INTERVIEW WITH HOLLWEG. AMSTERDAM, July 9. The Kaiser had a ninety minutes’ interview with Count von Bethman Hollweg who described the political situation. The “ Berliner Tageblatt” says the possibility of a coalition ministry is increasing rapidly. It is uncertain whether Count von Bethmann-Hallweg will lead such a ministry or resign. WIDESPREAD STRIKE.
AMSTERDAM, July 9. Nearly all the factories in the Rhine country arc idle, the workers demanding the same concessions as their Russian confreres obtained. SITUATION EXTREMELY .GRAVE. NEW YORK, July 9. The ‘ ‘ Times’ ’ Hague correspondent has received word from Berlin that the Kaiser had arranged to hold a Crown Council, which always precedes a decision of momentous issue. Plain statements in German papers, give evidence of the extreme gravity of the situation The “Weser Zcitung ” remarks that though the Chancellor’s existence is at stake, far graver issues are raised. GERMAN MINORITY SOCIALISTS. STOCKHOLM, July 9. The German Minority Socialists, in a manifesto announcing tlieir views on peace, demand general disarmament, as the sole means of destroying militarism. The manifesto denounces economic warfare, and demands compulsory arbitation, the conclusion of peace without annexations or indemnities, and the re-establishments of Serbia as an independent nation. It declares that it would be unjust to treat Russian Poland differently from Austro-German Poland; favours a referendum regarding Alsace-Lorraine, and the payment ci compensation to Belgium; and denounces the policy of Colonial eon l * quests.
AMSTERDAM, July 9. The Socialist, Progressive Centre of National Liberal Leaders adopted Erzberger’s peace formula, submitting the following resolution to the Reichstag: “Germany is determined to hold out to the very end to prevent any spoliation, of its territory or any humiliation but does not contemplate annexations or the humiliation of enemies. If'oesires only peace securing Germany’s safety and economical development.’’ The meeting also insisted on the immediate introduction of a Parliamentary system. Erzberger demanded the immediate resignation of Admiral Capelle, Herr Zimmerman, and Herr Tellferieh. He insisted that the submarine campaign had failed. There is great excitement in the lobbies of the Reichstag. Many party meetings have been held. All responsible politicians point out that the current political events are of the greatest Importance to /the people’s future. BERNE, Jhly 10. The crisis is due to the Allies’ growing military strength, the Russian offensive, the bad and American intervention.
CANNOT DISCLOSE PEACE TERMS Received 9.35. NEW YORK, July 10. Telegrams from Berlin indicate that Count von Bethmann-Hollweg, in his speech in the Reichstag said. “I cannot declare peace terms.” WAR ON GERMANY. PEKING, July 10. It is expected that when Tuan-Chu-jui has settled the present trouble he will declare war on Germany.
