A SPIRITED PROTEST.
Says the Dunedin Star: —We are apprehensive that the people of this country will have to pay dearly for the ostenations designation of their Governor. It may be taken as certain that Parliament will one day be asked to raise the emolument to suit- the new dignity. At present the Governor receives £7,000 a year. In order to fill
onr mouths with a grandiose title which signifies nothing, the country is likely to be called upon to dip its hands in its pockets for a few extra thousands. What & time to select to burden the taxpayer with charges for mere display! With all the power that we can command we shall oppose any increase in the Governor-General's salary while the war lasts, and while other needs are so pressing. For instance, until an adequate honorarium is granted to members of Parliament there must be not one penny added to the cost of the Governor's establishment. Already there is sufficient outrage to the sense of proportion in paying a Governor £7,000 a year, a repre-i» sentative of the people £3OO, and sT*-' Legislative Councillor £2OO. In the meantime we will say no more, but will await further disclosure of the intentions of the Cabinet.
