USING GERMAN SHIPS. HUNTING SUBMARINES. BRAZIL’S NAVY CO-OPERATING Received 10.50. WASHINGTON, July 1. President Wilson has ordered the Shipping B'oard to take over the eighty-seven interned German-owned ships, with a total tonnage exceeding 500,000. The Board is empowered to use interned ships in any service, but it is believed most will be used in the Trans-Atlantic, alleviating the shortage of shipping of the Allies.
The Brazilian navy is co-operating with the American fleet in hunting submersibles off South America, thus practically joining the Allies. Officials are doubtful whether Brazil has formally declared war, because the Brazilian Government is inclined to regard Brazil’s attitude as defensive rather than offensive. SPANISH AFFAIRS. SPAIN AND THE ENTENTE. ARMY STRONGLY FAVOURABLE. Received 9 a.m. MADRID, July 1. Spain is definitely and rapidly taking a stand for the Entente. The principal newspapers have dismissed Germanophile writers, and are publishing articles. The army is strongly in favour of the Entente. SUBMARINES BARRED FROM SPANISH WATERS, Received 9.20. MADRID, July 1. A decree forbids belligerent submarines to enter Spanish waters under threat of internment.

An Egypt official message says: We conducted successful air raids on a supply depot at Tulkeram, an aerodrome at Ramlch, and military establishments near Jerusalem. General Allenby has arrived in Egypt and taken over the Command. AUSTRIAN AFFAIRS. RIOTERS AT BUDAPEST. Received 9.20 a.m. BERNE, July 3. Rioters at ‘.Budapest wrecked and plundered two hundred shops including eighty cafes. Martial law was proclaimed and the riots were suppressed. The president of the Austrian Food Board admits the hay crop is a bitter failure and the prospects for maize are gloomy.
