MILITARY APPEAL BOARD.
The Third Wellington Military Service Board heard and determined appeals in the Taihape Courthouse on Thursday afternoon, and continued its sitting yesterday.
j Chas. H. Hopkins, Taoroa, appealed ' on the grounds of hardship and public interest. He stated in'evidence that he was managing three properties. Mr. Barnes and the appellant's brother gave evidence in support of the appeal, both statng that it would be very difficult indeed to replace the ap'pellant on their farms. Mr. George Hopkins, to show the nature of labour ; difficulties experienced in the backblocks, related details of five cases in his own efforts to secure a suitable man for sheep-farm work. The appeal was dismissed and the appellant was given till 25th July to go into camp. William Martin Collins.—This was an appeal by the father, Mr. Jas. Collins, Opaea, who told the Board that between he and -his brother they had sent ten sons to the front. His son Patrick was now going into camp, and William was the only assistance he had for ploughing and tending to the stock. The case was adjourned sine die.
j C. F. Jackson, railway porter, said Ihe was a returned soldier, and had 1 been in Samoa eight months. Produced his discharge, upon which Captain Baldwin remarked that he bore a good character. He asked for a month's exemption, as when he was given his discharge he thought he was finished with and he got married, but if they gave him a month he would be quite ready to go again. Captain Baldwin said this was a case for Government assistance and he recommended that an application be lodged. Mr. Jackson was given the time he asked for. H. T. Mcßae was ordered to attend at the next military medical board examination.
Maurice Sheeny, blacksmith, Raetihi, was given till 25th July to go into camp. J. C. Ross, dairyfarmer, Ohutu, did not appear and was similarly treated. Wm. Murphy, slaughterman, said he had two brothers in camp. One brother had enlisted and been rejected, but when he was drawn in the ballot the doctors passed him. The : appeal was dismissed. ] < Ernest Johnson, a gunner with nearly two years' service at the front, handed in his military dis-' charge which stated that he was quite unfit for further military service. The appeal was allowed.
