Another lengthy casualty list was issued by the Defence Department, containing some 1260 names, including 50 killed and died of wounds, arid 1200 wounded.

' It is reported that a large amount of money has been made in Marlborough this season in stock dealing. Competition has in many cases been very keen. In one instance a line of 500 sheep advanced 10s per head between the time that the farmer sold it and the time it was taken off the place.
For not coming to the assistance of a policeman who was making an arrest of a fireman, three men were fined in the Auckland Police Court on Wednesday last the sum of £2 10s, and costs. It appears the fireman was violently resisting, and the constable called on three men who were working close by, but they only jeered at his appeals.
Before the Military Service Board at Wellington recently, Archbishop O'Shea, appealed on behalf of Patrick F. McArthy, John Higgins, and Joseph V. Spillane, theological students at Greenmeadows. The Chairman was asked whether, in view of the different rulings by various Boards, the present Board considered the acting-Premier's certificate was mandatory. The chairman replied in the negative. The Archbishop stated that each of the students was in the last four years of his course and had' taken temporary vows. In reply to the military representative, the Archbishop said those vows'could be abandoned. They were not like the final vows, but only vows of obedience. The Board dismissed the appeals, the appellants being granted leave to July 24.
It is stated now that butter has been withdrawn from store and sold in New Zealand at Is 3d, remarks the Mercantile Gazette (Wellington), which adds: "If this be so, then the butter should be retailed at Is 6d instead of Is Sd, Even the lower price is unwarranted by the condtions. In Victoria, where there is a scarcity of butter, the price has been fixed at Is 5d per lb., and that ought to be the retail price in New Zealand. The more prudent holders of butter will presently recognise that it is better to cut losses and get the best price abtained locally. The London market is dead for the present, and although we are promised an improvement in tonnage by- the end of next month, there is no guarantee of fulfilment. .
