THREE MINUTES' OVERTIME.
STRIKE ON FEDERAL RAILWAY MELBOURNE, May 27. The Minister of Works and Railways, Mr. Watt, has determined to take a definite stand with regard to the numerous petty strikes on the east-west rail way construction works. The chief engineer, Mr. Bell, reports that on May 17 a gang of fettlers returned to the station, 40S miles out from Port Augus ta, at 5.3 p.m., or three minutes after kn'ocking-off time. The ganger* refused to book these three minutes as overtime, and in consequence the men. refused to commence work next morning Mr. Bell imediatcly ordered that the services of the whole of the men should be dispensed with. i Mr. Watt has approved of this action. From Kalgoorlie it is reported that a strike was threatened by railway work ers in consequence of the rates for board at the Government branch at the head of the line being increased from 25/- to 27/6 a week. The Minister has directed that until he has had time to inquire into the matter the old rates should be continued.
