A correspondent at Italian headquarters states that Austrian counterattacks in great -strength, freshness and tenacity are due to the arrival of more divisions from Russia. Four have been identified in the latest battles.

The Times' Rome correspondent says that hard fighting on the Carso continues. This morning the Aus-
trians attacked in great force, throwing waves of infantry behind a terrific curtain of fire. Our artillery was equally active. The Italians at first lost ground, but heroically recovered it. The Italians have lost the slopes of Hermada, and are now back oh the
low ground facing the rise. On Tuesday they recovered the lost ground.

Italian official: We broke up an enemy attack, preceded by destructive fire at Vodice.
Big enemy assaulting parties covered by violent artillei/y fire, attempted to approach souinward of Castagnivizza. We counter-attacked and repulsed them, capturniiig prisoners.

The "Daily Chronicle's" Roumanian correspondent says the whole of Roumania is watching the Russian situation with the greatest anxiety. Rouis irrevocably bound to the AlTlies. Any defection on Russia's part would result in the disappearance of Roumania from the comity of nations. The army is ready and eager and awaits the signal to attack, but the indifference and inertia of her powerful neighbour paralyses its initiative. Guns and rifles are silent everywhere, The Germans are continually showering leaflets saying the Roumanians are the victims of French and English duplicity. German agents, disguised as Russian officers, readily cross the frontier, seeking to overthrow the Roumanian dynasty, but} the Roumanian solider refused to be cajoled into betraying his king. The Riiited Press Bureau says: According to the best informed Government officials, hope of an Allied victory this year has gone. Americans plans are now being mad e on the probabilty of three years' more wan Bussia has collapsed and is believed to be out of the war as an offensive factor, probably for good, while France can be | counted only to hold her own.
