Whilst a party were driving on Long Beach between Purakonui Inlet and Otago Heads, a patch of quicksand almost swallowed the horse, and trap. The ladies and children in the trap were naturally alarmed when the horse bogged and the trop sank down until its flooring boards were level with the beach. Help was fortunately handy, shovels and buckets were supplied by neighbouring farmers, and eventually the horse and trap were extricated, the women and children having been previously rescued from their perilous predicament. Patches of quicksand are said to have been unknown on this beach before, and the presence of the patch is attributed to the recent heavy rains.

Harkness, chairman of the conference of North Auckland dairy factory representatives. An Australian who was at Gallipoli from start to finish said: "I have been in two real fights—Lone Pine and Lagnicaurt. For sheer ferocity and quick killing these beat the rest hollow. The Germans at Lagnicourt came on on a six-battalion front, and in seven lines. The hills were black with them. We fired until they were close, and then 'went' for them. It was a case of butt ends, bombs, and anything handy. After a bit Fritz lost his head and began to squeal. I killed a German working a machinegun with one hand while he held the other over his head, shouting 'Kamerad' all the time. Wo reckoned that four, divisions were wrecked that day. Over two thousand dead lay in front of the Australians. My battalion got to the Hindenburg line, but could not stay. It is a terrible trench, with a concrete and earth head-cover, almost proof against shell-fire. The wire is sometimes 500 yards wide. But we shall get it- Few of the Fritzes there will ever see daylight again."
