BANK OF NEW ZEALAND.
WELLINGTON, June 8. The annual balance, sheet of the Bank of New Zealand shows profits for the year totalling £436,631, less £21,141 interest on guaranteed stock. It is proposed to pajr a dividend of 4 per cent, on A preference and 6 per cent, on B preference, also on ordinary shares, and a bonus of 3 per cent, on B preference and ordinary shares, and to add £72,858 to the reserve.
THE GERMAN MISTAKE. BRITAIN UNDERESTIMATED LONDON, May 30. The German press is publishing a remarkable article by a publicist named Kohler, in which he declares that German}- seriously under-estimated the British Empire. German experts expected the war to finish by Christmas, I■■).].l, because it was assumed that England s maximum toutinental army would be (30.000. Germany made the mistake of forgetting history and England’s great experience in warfare. She is only gradually realising that England is extremely capable in a military sense. Dip lomats also under estimated British diplomacy, and failed to appreciate the existence of pronounced Anglo-Amerl-canism as a definite counter-balance'to Germanism. Editors, commenting on the article, warn Germany to learn a lesson, and not to over-estimate her own powers and qualities, or to underestimate the powers and qualities of her enemies.
