The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE

FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 1917. SHEEP ART UNION.

(With which is incorporated The Taihape Post and Waimari'no News),

STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS, r, , ; The Statement of Accounts of the Taihape Farmers’ Red Cross Sheep Art Union, published in another column, must be regarded as a most satisfactory document from every point of view. It discloses that the farmers of this district have been responsible for the handing over of another' £3051 to the Rod Cross Society for, the prosecution of its splendid work at the front, where to-day our men arc needing all that can possibly be done for them. The value of the sheep they gave has been considerably more than trebled by the efforts of a few earnest men at the head- of whom were Zvlr. Peyton, Mr. De Latour, and Mr. H. O’Callaghan, With Mr. A. M. Ryan as secretary. The Statement is a simple, uninvolved one, as all such documents should be; it shows just what help this district got in the sale of tickets by the amounts retained in j the various centres where they were sold. For instance, it will be seen that from only two other places did any material help come, Wellington people disposed of £594 worth of tickets and Wanganui of £459 worth, the next highest being Wairarapa, £35. The sheep, it will be seen, were given by Taihape farmers, and the people of Taihape and district bought the bulk of the tickets, they having accounted for no less than £2528 worth. The gross sales brought £4004 10s od., the gross expenses were £353 3s 7d., leaving £3651 6s sd. net for the object for which the sheep were given. It is a truly marvellous result, and Mr. Peyton has certainly earned this district’s most hearty ; congratulations. The expenses are Jiffy pounds below the ten per cent, limit allowed by the Government, and no item of expenditure can be regarded as other than extremely moderate. For tickets sold in this district the Taihape Red Cross Fund is swelled by £2528 8s 5d., the balance of the total going to the other districts in which*' the tickets were sold. It is well not to forget that the attainment of such splendid results entailed a very great deal of hard work. Mr .Peyton and his lieutenant Mr. De Latour, had, on many occasions to sacrifice their private business to ensure the Sheep Art Union being a success, and Mr. O’Callaghan in addition to sheep he conributed, made a considerable donation in the form of benzine in his various ticketselling journeys. These men gave time and money, and when it comes to the spending of the money let our people not forget this, the main feature, without which there would not have been the money to spend. Let us give ■ honour to whom honour is 1 due.
