THE SERBIAN REVOLT.
The cablegrams recently have been informing us of a wide: spreading revolt of the Serbians, who are groaning under the iron heels of their Hunnish oppressors. Recently a group of American journals sent a prominent writer, Edward Marshall, to gather something of the reeord of Serbia's fate, and ho has returned with such a record of hor 'ror as even the worst Hunnish episodes of "the war have, not equalled. One great Serbian, Professor Popovitch, who held a chair in Belgrade University be . fore the war, supplied the American witli chapter and verse regarding Ger man, Austrian, and Bulgarian atroci- '; ties. And he emphasises that these hor '" 'rors have been planned and carried out methodically and with malice aforethought, so that by the time the war ends there will be no men to father the Serbian race. Look at this item from Mr. Marshall's details: "It was an epic of grim horror that Professor Popovitch told me. Much of it I shall not tell because I cannot tell it in the columns of a newspaper. Such things, are unprintable as the photographs he ,/,' showed me. One of them pictured hu-'f man bodies in a pile. All dead. And <| more than that. All naked. And more ' than that. Alii mutilated. And still more '■,. than that... All girls. Wolves had not "f torn the -flesh, in'brutal hunger. Man, wicked where a wolf is merely,, well, a wolf, and . stomach hungry—had done this mutilation. A tale of utterly maniacal human bestiality that photo tells. It would be well for the honour of this generation with the generations which •will follow it that all prints of that photograph should be destroyed, that the negative should be destroyed. But the memory of it in every mind which ever has been cognisant of it can never be destroyed.'" Horrible, yes.
