Private cabled advices received from Now York show an advance of 2,1d01. 50 cents (£5 (is) in direct freights'to New Zealand on those ruling immediately prior to th 0 ' United States’ entry into the war.
The war expenditure of the Dominion to March 31st was £22,075,238. The total included an amount of £4,500,000 paid to the Imperial Government for the maintenance of New Zealand troops in the field, the supply of ammunition, and the provision, of an extra transport. This is the first statement of expenditure in New Zealand in which this item is included, but on many occasions it has been mentioned by the Defence Minister as a debt.
A witness at the Palmerston sitting of the Appeal Board stated that he had two sons who had returned from the front, and both had been wounded. One had been offered a pension of 5s per week, but he had refused to take it. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M„ chairman of the Board, controverted witness’s statement "I may tell you,” said Mr. Cooper, “as Chairman of the Pensions Board, that such a pension has never been offered to any one”
“Do you v mean to say that is an industry without an award?” asked Mr Justice Hocking in the Supreme Court in Wellington,' alluding to the work done by bush hands connected with sawmilling work. Mr. O’Regan .counsel in the case, replied that he was not sure, but would ascertain the position. In response to a question, the witness under examination said: “No, we don’t work under an award — you get all you can,” He added that the usual rate paid was 14s a day.

To-day is the last day fixed for the submission to the tax commissioner of returns of income for the past year. Any taxpayer who fails to make his returns in the prescribed time is liable to a penalty of not loss than £2 or more than £IOO, also to the imposition of treble the ordinary amount of tax.
A plumber named Walter Jones was electrocuted in Christchurch on Wednesday. While engaged in installing a hot water service at the Infectious Diseases Hospital at Bottle Lake, he accidentally rested an iron pipe against an electric wir e carrying 3100 volts. Death was instantaneous. He was a married man with four children.
The Government fields inspector at Ashburton has a consignment of 770 kca heads from the Mesopotamia sheep station, Canterbury. The owner of the station allows the employees 2s 6d per head, and in return receives a refund of Is per head from the Government and a similar amount from, the Ashburton County Council.
It is complained by business men in various parts of the Dominion that pillaging of goods is becoming serious on our railways. Cases have been opened in transit recently and numerous pairs of boots and other articles extracted. It is thought that the shortage of staff is responsible, as the old-time vigilance cannot now be maintained.
When the New Zealand troops arrived in Sydney recently, their advent was hailed with the usual eock-a doodle-doos from the boats in the harbour, and the Mosman ferry, on its way to the Quay, sped close under the bows of the big steamer —so close that the young men on the upper deck lifted their hats and cheered lustily. A long Maorilandor; leaning over the rail, scanned the group all young, all healthy: “Why,’ - ’ he asked, “is the war over?”
Sir Edward Morris, Premier of Newfoundland, tells of the valor of Private Gardner, a youth cf 23, son of a Newfoundland fisherman, coming from Trinity Bay. 'ln the grey of morning this man went up to a German trench quite alone and summoned the occupants to surrender. The enemy thought that he was an officer with a big force behind him, with the result that 72 Germans and one officer surrendered and followed -him to the British lines.
In a speech at Christchurch, Mr. Isitt let the cat out of the bag. He said he had been talking to a Cabinet Minister, whose genuine character he immensely admired, and h e said: “Isitt, I am absolutely heartsick. There are .some magnificent exceptions, but the great bulk of the people are all the same. Labour or capital, capital or labour, they come here and whine and threaten, and they struggle for their own interests, and they don’t seem to care a damn for the safety of the Empire.”
From to-day the price of butter will be increased one penny pen pound retail, and will remain at 1/8 for the next three months. This is in accordance with an Ordor-iu-Council issued on the recommendations of the Board of Trade, - under which the price was advanced one farthing per pound to storekeepers during the month of April, and another farthing for May and June. A further increase of one farthing per pound will take place for the months of July and August unden this ment.At the Foxton Police Court on Monday, William Healey was charged by W. H. Richmond, undertaker, with the theft of a coffin for his deceased child. The coffin was made and was taken away from complainant’s premises without the latter’s knowledge or consent, not paid for, though Healey was about to leave the district. Accused denied that Richmond had mentioned that it was to be a cash transaction. He called for the coffin, & which was urgently required, Richmond was not on the premises, and he took the coffin which was left in a prominent place in the shop. He handed the money to complainant in Court. The case was dismissed.
Among the passengers on a city tram were a major and a subaltern. The major was occompanied by two ladies, and the junior lieutenant was sitting oposite to his superior officer. Presently the subaltern asked the major if he might speak'to him a moment. The major in an eighteenpounded voice, peculiar to his rank, said, ‘'Come over here and let me hear what you have to say!” The lieuten-* ant you at the door, sir.” “Well,” said the military genius, as he stood up, “Be brief then.” All the starch left him when he was quietly informed that some of the buttons of bis uniform were undone which is contrary to military regulations.

At the Fire Brigade social last night the first prize in the euchre tournamen was Avon by Mrs. Kennedy, the gent’s by Mr. Duder. Miss Cousdins secured the booby prize, and Mr. Friday Olsen Avon similar honours among the gents. The first lady’s prize Avas an umbrella, and the first gent’s prize a splendid shaving outfit, presented by Mr. Sep. Reid.
