GENERAL TELEGRAMS

SHIPPING DIFFICULTY.

PROBABLE IMPROVEMENT,

MR. MASSEY IS OPTIMISTIC

DUNEDIN, May 26

Sir James Allen stated to-day that the Government has communicated with the Prime Minister and the Imperial Government as to the shipping difficulty, and that Mr. Massey has sgnt a reply discussing the position. The Prime Minister states that unless the submarine difficulty increases, the shipping position of hew Zealand will improve from July onwards.

It is practically certain that wool, sheepskins and hides will be requisitioned by the Imperial Government, the same as last season, and probably at the same prices. Mr. Massey thinks it unlikely that the Imperial Government will purchase butter, but possibly an additional quantity of cheese will be bought. In regard to tallow and general cargo, the oritlook is the same as has prevailed this season. The Prime Minister informs Sir James Alien tjhat w'hile producers must understand that there is considerable difficulty as to shipment, there is no reason to decrease production. Sir James Allen explains that the Government is giving the question of production careful consideration. Thr matter is now being considered by a conference which is devising means for utilising the available shipping space to the best possible advantage.
